Brief History
Established in May, 1997, Western Ecology, LLC was created to provide ecological restoration services to Governmental organizations and NGO’s. The original idea was inspired by several years of fly fishing throughout the Rocky Mountain West. The expertise and training was received at Howard University, then developed and applied in cancer research (cell dysplasia) at the National Institutes of Health, and several years of working on the East Coast and just prior to establishment, at Los Alamos National Labs, lab-wide hazardous waste clean-up.
After more training in river geomorphology and continuing research in watershed processes, the focus moved upslope to hillsides, drainage, erosion control, revegetation, soils, plants and stormwater infiltration. A partnership with Dr Robert Dixon of the Imprinting Foundation, Tucson, AZ was established in 2002. The purpose of the alliance was to develop and manufacture the Dixon Land Imprinter™ (DLI). This collaboration resulted in public recognition the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) in 2006 when we received an AE50 Award for “Most Innovative Products of 2006” for Western Ecology’s redesign and manufacture of 3 portable versions, engineering and investigation into the highly effective practice of Land Imprinting for slopes and range.
Since 1997, the DLI has completed over 50,000 hectares of land restoration.
