Resilience and adaptation

Resilience is built into natural systems. Adaptation is an evolving process. Understanding constantly changing natural systems is a worldwide endeavor. Our base of understanding increases because we rely on research, analysis, high-tech tools, and observation to complete works. We engage in discussions and aid in selecting methods that are both old and new. Failure is as instructive as success. Upon examination, what on first glance appears to be a failure is also adaptation in progress. There are exceptions, invasive species for example change the landscape or watershed too quickly for adaptation to occur. Often this results in significant losses of populations of flora and fauna. Measurement, data gathering are critical to understanding how to quantify the observation.

The solution is never all good or all bad. It is better, adaptive and resilient. The curve trends toward self-sustaining environments that yield beneficial resources on an order that is low-cost and free of maintenance. The populations of flora and fauna must trend and maintain a level that is adequate and of high quality for sustainability. Improved sites provide: food production, carbon sequestration, better soil & water quality output (even at disturbed sites), and reproduction of fauna and pollination of flora.

Charles Cassagnol

Owner and founder of Western Ecology,LLC. My foundation is in Chemistry and Engineering with a minor in Biology studies. Over the years my focus has evolved into systems complexity and how this understanding may be applied to ecological systems. I have live in Santa Fe, NM since 1990. With restoration as my focus mitigation my skills have developed to further include practical tools: satellite data analysis, LiDAR surveying, statistics, modelling, GIS and soils mapping.
